Unix Systems Engineer
This position will be based in the Unix server support team and will provide support and system administration to the UNIX server environment used throughout the client's estate. The UNIX estate is based largely on IBM AIX and is made up of an estate of servers residing on both physical and virtual infrastructures.The successful candidate will be responsible for providing the technical support and monitoring of all physical and virtual servers within the estate. This will include resolving any hardware or software issues raised through the Landesk ticketing system or via the Solarwinds server alerting system. The successful candidate will work closely with the development teams and those within the wider infrastructure and IT operations team to provide the best level of support to the UNIX systems and its supporting hardware. There will also be a requirement to complete regular server checks and monitor any alerts raised through the relevant alerting systems ensuring that servers operate optimally whilst ensuring that they continue to achieve the service levels required by the business.
The successful candidate will also need to partake in ensuring the total management of the IT estate, including patch management, asset management, software licence management.
There will be a requirement to partake in the on-call support rotation and be flexible to undertake essential work outside of normal business hours.
Key Responsibilities and skills include:
* Competent in supporting a production UNIX estate centred around an AIX environment
* Understanding of a business-focused environment and the use of IT as a tool for delivering business priorities.
* Plan, install, build, manage, support, configure and test server infrastructure components and connectivity
* Responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure
* Demonstrable experience in supporting and managing a large number of complex UNIX server environments both physical and virtual
* Maintain the integrity of the UNIX environment across the Group and develop the environment to keep pace with changing business demands.
* Monitor and troubleshoot backups, scheduled jobs, and be able to monitor systems and processes and take proactive action
* Perform routine maintenance; check free hard-drive space, memory and CPU utilisation and perform physical checks of system.
* Perform Hardware/Software Inventory
* Evaluate requests for hardware and software; research and recommend solutions to technology needs, compatible with the client's technology architecture and infrastructure and resource constraints
* Troubleshoot, repair and escalate support incidents
* Perform proactive capacity planning, including short term and long-term trend analysis, ensuring all server infrastructure devices are monitored for capacity and stability
* Undertake performance monitoring and tuning on the UNIX server estate and proactively make proposals to improve performance and utilisation of resources.
* Ensure UNIX environments are secure, particularly with regard to the web facing applications.
* Review Audit Logs, Track/monitor system performance and activity
* Perform system changes following existing change management processes
* Possess the necessary skills for liaising with both technical and non-technical teams
* To act in a professional manner at all times, engendering a positive view of the department by those outside it.
